Hello and thank you for spending your
valuable time coming to my humble site.
What follows is a brief history of
Download4U.net:
I originally started Download4U.net
as a service of downloading files from
the Internet for people. It was a
completely custom Internet application
built from the ground up. At the time
when I was running the service, leased
line access in South Africa was pretty
expensive and difficult to get. I also
could not find an affordable web-hosting
company that could satisfy my
requirements, so I ran the entire
service from home using an ADSL
connection.
The site had a growing software
directory of about 2000 different
programs and files. People would surf
the site adding software they wanted to
an integrated shopping cart. When
they had selected what they wanted and
submitted their order, I would get onto
the Internet and download their
requested files, write them to CD-ROM
and then post it to them.
I started the site as a hobby while I
was waiting for employment. The great
thing about Download4U.net at the time
was that you were not constrained to
just the selection of software I had in
my own database. If someone wanted a
specific file on the 'net they could add
a Custom Request to their Request List
for me to go and get the files for them
Unfortunately it was not really
profitable and it consumed almost all of
my time, so when I sold my house, I shut
down the site as well.
