Q: Your site looks dull, why don't you add some nice graphics and stuff?

Our site was designed to be as fast as possible. This is the reason why you will not see large, fancy graphics, Macromedia Flash intros, and banner advertisements that slow down our web pages. We provide a speedy download service and do not believe in hogging up your connection with unnecessary junk. We strive to accommodate people that have slow connections to the Internet.

Q: How do I install or use the 'XYZ' application?

Hey, I am just one guy over here, if I had to answer all these 'support' requests I would never have time to update the site. Sorry, but I can't answer support requests. Your best bet is to contact the developer of the software directly.

Q: What is Adware and Spyware?

These are programs that contain advertisements (AdWare) and / or monitor your behaviour (Spyware). The advertisements are sent to your computer while you are using the program. Some of these programs also monitor your behaviour on your computer and send the statistics back to the developer's site for analysis. Adware is usually a payment model that the developers use to generate an income from the software they have created, thereby allowing them to give the program away freely.

Some people are not comfortable with Adware because they feel that it invades their privacy by monitoring aspects of their behaviour and transmitting these statistics back to the developers. Note: There have been cases where the software contains malicious code that could compromise your computer and personal information.

Q: What do the different licenses mean?

It is strongly recommended that you read the complete license agreement of the download before you install it. Below is a short description of the most common licenses.
LicenseDescription
AbandonwareOld original software that has been abandoned. The copyright holders of the software usually do not exist as an entity any more.
AdwareSoftware that is usually free. The software downloads and displays advertising from the developer's website.
CommercialSoftware that is commercially sold. This software usually contains a trial period whereafter it expires.
DemoSoftware that contains subset of the original commercial software's features. It is usually fully functional for the components that the developer has selected to demonstrate the features of the software.
FreewareFully functional free software that is copyrighted. You can download and use this software without having to pay for it.
GPLFully functional free software.
Mozilla PL1.1Fully functional free software.
Open SourceFully functional free software.
PostcardwareFully functional free software that requires that you send an email or postcard to the developer.
SharewareShareware is available in many forms. It is usually fully functional software that allows you to use the package for a time period before you are required to purchase a licensed copy.
SubscriptionSoftware that is fully functional, but requires the purchase of a subscription in order to use it to its full potential.

How much does it cost to use Download4U.net?

Download4U.net membership, site content and our newsletters are completely free.

How do I know if the software will work on my computer?

Before you request a download you can check the application's details for the operating system minimum requirements. Programs that list Windows 95 or Windows 98 should be fully functional under Windows 2000, Me, and Windows XP. Please check on the software provider's web site if your system is compatible with the software you want to download.

Can you help me uninstall the 'XYZ' program?

There are potentially tens of thousands of different programs out there, each with different installation files and techniques. It would be virtually impossible for us to get to know each of these programs and how to uninstall them. Unfortunately it is not possible for me to provide assistance with the uninstalling of these programs. There are however Un-install utilities available that may be able to help you with this.

Are the downloads virus-free?

Most respectable developers of software always check their software before hosting it on their servers. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that all the software is virus free. I highly recommend that you get and install  anti-virus software on all of your computers and, more importantly, make sure that your anti-virus signatures are always up to date.
